The use of chemical substances in order to treat cancer is known as Chemotherapy. Here, at Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, we have expertise in cancer chemotherapy to treat cancer using cytotoxic drugs.
Chemotherapy can also be given alone. It is used along with surgery and/ or radiation therapy in the following ways:
- Chemotherapy, with or without radiation therapy, is sometimes given before surgery so that the tumor is reduced. In addition to that it not only makes the process of removal easier but also makes way for minimal invasive surgery. This is known as neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
- Chemotherapy is given after surgery in order to destroy any remaining cancer cells. This is called adjuvant chemotherapy.
- Chemotherapy can be used as a radiosensitizer that makes the radiation treatments more effective.
- Chemotherapy may also be used with or without surgery or radiation therapy if the cancer recurs or it spreads to other parts of the body.
