Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime
Minister of India and President of Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital
Society, visited the Hospital along with Smt. Sonia Gandhi, on August 1,
1987, and personally apprised himself about the scope, activities and
potential of the Hospital and the services being rendered by it in the
region. He took keen interest in development activities and desired that
the Hospital be expanded and should evolve into a "Centre of
Excellence". He felt that this could be achieved by amalgamating
the benefits of modern technology and innovations in the medical field.
He desired that the proposed Centre of Excellence should
evolve into a Medical Technology Developer in Reproductive Health and
Oncology Care.
Bio-medical Sciences in Reproductive Health Care and Genomanic Research
were in the formative stages in that period and it was expected that a
breakthrough would be achieved in various areas in due course. The
Hospital thus has to be made a focal point for amalgamating the
trend-setting innovations which are taking place in Reproductive Health
Care and Oncology. The vision of Shri Rajiv Gandhi and
the past historical record of the Hospital were the two invaluable
assets for planning the upgradation of the services, research
capabilities and development of quality human resources in the medical
field at the proposed Centre of Excellence.
It was thus decided by the Hospital management to build a separate
multi-disciplinary facility known as Indira Gandhi Bhawan to house the
aforesaid facilities within the Hospital campus. Shri Rajiv Gandhi, had
a vision that this nodal facility would blend the existing
infrastructure and would meet the demands of the next century for the
population of Uttar Pradesh and adjoining states. The
Foundation Stone of the proposed Indira Gandhi Bhawan was laid by Shri
Rajiv Gandhi when he visited the Hospital on November 12, 1989.
