Medical Physics & RIA Research Laboratory

The Department has earned recognition at National and International levels for excellence in innovations in RT treatment planning, quality assurance in radiotherapy and basic and applied research. Quality Assurance in Radiodiagnosis & Imaging, Radiation safety and radiation biological modeling of treatment response are some of the topics of intense and continues evaluation.

Department involves itself in

• RT treatment planning, applied and clinical dosimetry,
• Radiological safety, performance and quality evaluation of the facilities in radiology and imaging and radiotherapy,
• Post Graduate Teaching, Training and Research in a coordinated manner in all the activity of the Regional Cancer Centre.

The patient care services include

• Individualized treatment planning, dosage calculation,
• Radiation dosimetry for external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy,
• Quality assurance in imaging and therapy and maintenance of all the major radiological facilities.

The health physics services taken up

• Radiation measurements and monitoring and TLD badge services for radiation evaluation,
• Facility planning and implementation of all AERB/BARC recommendations and its coordination,
• TLD badge services for radiation safety of personnel etc.

The Department has published number of quality research work in various Journals and Books. Three papers were accepted for presentation in the World Congress on Medical Physics held at Sydney, Australia. The detailed Research activities are given under the section Publications/Presentations.

The R.I.A. laboratory has remained fully functional for clinical testing of hormones and tumor markers and continues to garner support of BRIT, DAE, Mumbai. The department actively participated in the education, training, research and development and academic activities of the Hospital.

RIA and IRMA utilized by the Lab. are one of the utmost's sensitive and important Radioisotopes Techniques used in medicine for clinical diagnostic purposes. It is useful for clinical evaluation of all viability important biological ingredients such as hormone, steroids, drugs, etc. thereby facilitating early diagnosis of various diseases and better management of treatment. This unique facility is available only at very few centers in India and this is the one such facility in the country.
