Maternal & Child Health services
commenced with the establishment of our Hospital six decades ago.
A Healthy Mother & a Healthy Child was the vision of
Kamala ji, which she advocated through out her life. The Hospital
has since dedicated itself towards the care and treatment of poor and
needy women. The indoor beds have increased over the years from 40 to
306. Out of which 235 are free beds. 175 beds are reserved for teaching
purposes.
In the last six decades, the Department has extended its
services from grass root level to tertiary level. Specialized treatment
facilities have kept pace with the growth in medical technology and
emerging needs. For its services this Department has received
several recognitions:
Special Recognitions & Achievements
- Two former head's of the department were recipients of National
Awards (Padmashree) for their outstanding contribution in the field
of Reproductive & Child Health.
- The department is affiliated to M L N Medical College, Allahabad
to provide teaching and clinical facilities in Obstetrics &
Gynaecology for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the year
1964.
- Recognized as Centre for Post Martum Programme of the GOI, in
1971.
- Recognized by Central Board of Examinations for DNB teaching and
training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, in 1991.
- The Indian College of Maternal & Child Health, Kolkata has
recognized the Department as its Regional Center for conducting
Dawn's Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
- Government of India recognised the Department as Training Center
for MTP and laparoscopic Sterilization.
Besides the above the Hospital was recognised as a
"Baby
Friendly Hospital" by
UNESCO for encouraging breast
feeding through innovative effort in 1994.
The CARE sponsored project aimed to improve the reproductive health
status of women and men living in 50 slums of Allahabad, U.P. by 2004.
The goal of the project was to eliminate poverty by reducing
reproductive health related morbidity and mortality among men and women
in city slums. The Programme covered 7075 eligible couples residing in
50 slums of Allahabad City. The strategy and achievements of the project
are following :
- 99 Women Health Volunteers (WHVs) and 56 Men Health Volunteers
(MHVs) were selected (2-3 per slum) and trained on reproductive
health issues (safe motherhood, RTIs/STIs, HIV/AIDS, cancer, birth
spacing, self-esteem, sexuality and reproductive rights),
maintenance of records, conducting meetings at their Centers, etc.
Total 125 women groups were formed which included 1625 women.
- About 60 per cent men were involved through IPC at all stages of
the project in order to encourage attitudinal and behavioural change
regarding safe sex, child spacing and male responsibility and
support to women in early treatment and management of their
reproductive health problems.
- 50 WHC and 68 RCH were established.
- The Adolescent Clinic established at KNMH, provided an
opportunity to the adolescents to freely discuss their problems with
the Gynaecologist and Counselor.
- Total 37 Community Development Committees known as Basti Vikas
Samiti (BVS), were formed which addressed the Development needs of
the community.
