The department has a distinguished record of serving the patients for over 55 years. It was the second facility to come up as a department during the formative years of the hospital and since then it has grown to amalgamate modern technology and needs of emerging medical care.

Cancer treatment can not commence without the support of pathology. From a modest beginning in the year passed by the department conducted 114262 tests. The Department has moderately equipped facilities in Cytology, Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology and histopathology. In addition, diagnostic facilities are also available for Hormone assays, Elisa based tumor markers, bacterial & fungus culture & sensitivity.

The unique feature of the department has been to support the cancer treatment programme and its well coordinated approach to meet the oncology needs. Papsmear and cytology samples for camps and active support has been able to detect a large no of patients at early stage for curative treatment. Review of histopathology slides for establishing the correct grading of the tumor has been the one of the main stay of the department.

HIV/AIDS have a crippling effect on the social fabric and the department has been equitable in its task to extend the counseling and detection facilities for the last 15 years and is credited with being one of the first few centre in the state.

The Voluntary Counseling & Testing Center For HIV/AIDS


KNMH is the one out of two NGOs in the whole of Uttar Pradesh, where NACO has made a State Level Reference Laboratory. Patients are being referred here from far off areas for HIV testing and pre & post test counseling. Screening tests for HIV are being done by Elisa and Rapid test methods, the kits for which are provided by the State AIDS Control Society (UPSACS).

HIV testing started in 1993 in the Department of Pathology, with the recognition of the Department as AIDS Surveillance Center by NACO. An Elisa Reader and a Washer was provided by NACO to the Centre. The Center is attached to the Department of Pathology. The Hospital was given the status of VCTC in the year 1998 by National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), Government of India.

Testing of the cases referred from various Government, District Hospitals and Primary Health Centers is done free of cost.

Since, the cases referred to this Center are of high risk group, the average rate of positive cases is 5.80%, out of which approximately 65% were males and 35% females.

HIV/AIDS Awareness Camp

One month (January 15th to Feb. 15th) Camp was organized in the Magh Mela, in collaboration with Regional Field Publicity Office.Awareness programme was organized for NSS Students of Allahabad Degree College and Allahabad University.

AIDS Awareness Camp in Swasthya Mela organized with the support of Government of India.
  • VCTC participated in three Swasthaya Melas held at Allahabad between January 15 to February 21, 2004.. Facility for Counseling and awareness was provided to all the visitors in the Mela. High risk cases were referred to VCTC.
  • Awareness was imparted through Exhibition of posters, Magic and Puppet Shows and distribution of Folders.
  • Medical Officer conducted Clinics and screened high-risk cases and referred.
  • AIDS counseling facility was provided.
  • Referrals of high risk included 12 for HIV testing and 36 for cancer.
  • VCTC, Regional Publicity Office and NSS students jointly took out a rally on HIV/AIDS.
