A grass-root health care delivery
system launched in Commemorative year of the Birth Centenary of Smt.
Kamala Nehru on August 1, 1998 by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, President KNMH
Society, for percolating the fruits of modem medicines at the doorsteps
of the rural areas. This has rekindled the hope of health care in the
masses of Kaushambi, Chail, Kaurihar, Kasaunda, Chauradih villages, now
in District Kaushambi, and adjoining villages & hamlets which had
remained unreached and unapproached. Health care system was shifted to
village Dandupur in Allahabad District from April 2002.
Since then, the villages are being visited by a team of
doctors every Saturday, providing free medical check-ups, free
distribution of medicines and carrying along the untreatable in the
village to the Apex Hospital, has been the trend mark of the project.
Needy patients are admitted, investigated and treated free of cost at
KNMH.
The focus has been polio inflicted children, women, senior citizens,
population below the poverty line, minorities, down-trodden and
marginalized sections of the society. Polio inflicted children are
provided free surgical and medical treatment at an Orthopaedic Centre.
Three children had tendon lengthening done -bilateral in two cases and
unilateral in third case.
Every week 150-200 patients are receiving treatment, completely free.
The doctors of the Hospital convert the primary school or verandah of
house-holds to conduct the clinic.

The Legacy
Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Allahabad, is a memorial, not only
built of bricks and mortar but has the legacy and responsibility to
carry forward the vision of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi to work
for the humanity at the end of the social spectrum. The Hospital, built
to enshrine the memories of Kamala Nehru, is an epitome of service,
sacrifice and health care delivery system for providing healing touch to
those who have been left behind in the race.
The priorities of Kamala Nehru were, health care for woman, children,
poor and needy and this has been the strength and single largest
commitment for the Hospital to identify continuously with the grass root
health needs.
Health Care through
community participation
The programme is being supported by the voluntary contributions
of medicines and medical services. The Gram panchayats and village folk
provide their input by arranging space and communicating to the People
about the visits of doctors. Smt. Sonia Gandhi had
personally visited these villages twice in 1998 -1999 and continues to
maintain communication with the grass roots personally. A special
drive for polio-inflicted children is launched on her initiative for
providing walking aids, tricycles, free of cost limb restoration and
corrective surgeries. It is a modem health care system resourced to the
voluntary contributions without any governmental inputs. This is an
example of social upliftment by the community by pooling the resources
of charitable, voluntary and philanthropic urge of the every noble
heart.
